One machine scheduling | Free template

One machine scheduling is a free template for determining the sequence of tasks or activities to be performed in the work place, i.e. the order in which jobs are to be performed.

Scheduling of jobs at a work site is done within the short-term production planning. The short-term production planning is based on the long-term and medium-term planning and means to schedule tasks or jobs to the resources available in the short term. In the short-term planning, there are no opportunities to increase or reduce capacity because the planning and scheduling is done for periods from 1 day to 3 months.

Effective short-term production planning is essential to create time-based competitive advantages. Effective short-term production planning should give reliable deliveries (JIT), low inventory levels and high capacity utilization. High capacity utilization provides shorter delivery times and, together with low inventory levels even lower costs.

Short-term production planning can be to assign tasks to different machines or other work sites or it can be about to arrange tasks within one machine or another work site. This template helps you to arrange or organize tasks in a machine or a work site.

Scheduling for a work site can be forwards or backwards. Forward scheduling means to schedule jobs as soon as it is known that the tasks have to be performed. Backward scheduling means that you start with the dates on which tasks must be finished and then first schedule the tasks that must be completed first.

Scheduling is usually done on the basis of four criteria’s used to evaluate how well a particular schedule is:
1. Minimizing completion time, evaluated on the total or average time taken to complete all tasks.
2. Maximizing capacity utilization, evaluated on the percentage of utilized capacity in relation to practically available capacity.
3. Minimize stocks of work in progress, evaluated on the average number of jobs in the system, fewer jobs in the system provides a smaller inventory of work in progress.
4. Minimize customer waiting time, evaluated on the total number or average number of delay days.

You can use this template to schedule tasks in a work site and get information about total and average times as well as a graphic picture of a Gantt chart. You can sort on the tasks and try to find the optimal schedule, depending on your business strategies. Short-term production planning can also be made in software for material and production planning, for example, an MPS-system, MRP software or ERP software.
