Process capacity planning with time | Free template

Process capacity planning with time is a free template that can be used to assess the future capacity needs and capacity utilization in a process when it comes to machine time and working hours.

Capacity planning is based on expected future demand where this demand is estimated using a sales forecast. In this template the activities performed in the process is specified and how the relationship between machine time and working time is in the activity, if machine time is set to 100% and working time is set to 100% it means that the activity uses one machine hour and one labor hour per activity hour.

For each product produced in the activity you have to enter how many minutes the activity requires to produce one unit of the product. For each product listed is also the expected demand in units per year entered. The expected demand in units and the time in minutes required to produce a unit determines how many machine minutes and working minutes that are required during the year. The total need of labor minutes and machinery minutes during the year are compared with the total capacity of labor minutes and machinery minutes available for a whole year.

The total capacity of labor minutes and machinery minutes are determined by the practical capacity available during the year. The practical capacity available for a process is the theoretically available capacity adjusted by an adjustment factor of 80-85% for breaks, slack, communication, stop, fault and maintenance. The theoretically available capacity is the volume used in the process when it is full occupancy. If a process has 3 machines and 3 workers who work 8 hours per day in 220 working days per year is the practical capacity available with a weighting of 85%, 269,280 machine minutes (3 machines * 8 h * 60 min * 220 days * 0.85 ) and 269,280 working minutes (3 workers 8 * h * 60 min * 220 days * 0.85).

You can use this template for your process capacity planning when capacity is measured in time and you want to assess the future capacity needs and capacity utilization in a process.
